FREE TOILET RECYCLING EVENT! your family can save water at home.
Instead of paying for landfill disposal, customers of Hillsboro Water and Tualatin Valley Water District (TVWD) are invited to drop off their old toilets for free at this event. The toilets will be ground up and used in road construction. Other porcelain fixtures, such as sinks and bathtubs, will also be accepted. Last year's spring roundup brought in 242 high water-using toilets, including at least one that used a whopping seven gallons per flush! Replacing 242 toilets with low-flow and high-efficiency models will save about 1.5 million gallons of water per year. Hillsboro Water Department does not currently offer a toilet rebate. However, a study is currently underway to see which rebates would most benefit the utility and its customers by maximizing water and money savings. There is a good chance that Hillsboro may add a toilet rebate sometime after July 2010. Customers are encouraged to check back or become Facebook Fans to receive the latest updates on rebate programs.

A water-wise demonstration garden has been designed and cultivated by students from Glencoe and Hillsboro High Schools participating in the 2009-10 Ford Institute Leadership Program. The purpose of the garden is to showcase water-wise plants, including Oregon natives, and encourage Hillsboro and Cornelius residents to use water-wise landscaping techniques at their own homes. It is the City's first water-wise Demonstration Garden.
