Each year, an estimated 100,000 tons of recyclable materials generated by businesses is sent to landfills in the Metro region. In an effort to help businesses more effectively capture recyclable materials and divert them from landfill, the Hillsboro City Council passed the Business Recycling Requirements ordinance (BRR) in 2009. The BRR calls for businesses to meet three basic requirements:
1. Recycle all paper, cardboard and containers (aluminum cans, plastic bottles and tubs, and glass bottles and jars).
2. Provide internal recycling receptacles throughout the workplace.
3. Post signs at collection areas that indicate which materials must be recycled.
The requirement is linked to the City business license. When a business signs the business license or renewal, they are agreeing to comply with the BRR.

In the summer of 2010, the City began an outreach effort to businesses to help them recycle and comply with the requirement. Over 500 businesses were visited, with over 400 businesses receiving free technical assistance, signs and materials to improve recycling systems. Businesses seeking technical assistance can contact the City by calling 503-681-5204 or by emailing our sustainability program. Additional information is available at the Washington County Recycle at Work program website.
