The Hillsboro Planning Department manages the City’s land use and community development. The Department is comprised of four divisions: Administration, Long Range Planning, Current Planning, and Transportation Planning; all of which are needed to implement the City's Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance by anticipating opportunities as well as ensuring that infrastructure and public services can accommodate the proposed land use developments. The Planning Department is also responsible for ensuring that state, regional and local community planning goals are accommodated through established development codes and regulations. The Department processes land use applications that may be handled through Administrative Review or taken to public hearing before the Planning Commission or the Planning and Zoning Hearings Board. A new committee supported by the Planning Department is the Historic Landmarks Advisory Committee who works in the interest of historic preservation, reviewing applications and making recommendations to the Planning Commission related to cultural resources in the City.
