Homework Help (funded by the Hillsboro Schools Foundation)
Participants have a designated, quiet time to work on homework for 30 minutes every day with assistance from the staff. However, not all homework may get done in this time. Participants are expected to have their homework or a book to read (if no homework) at the program every day.
Service Learning
During the year, your child will participate in at least two service projects. To complete these projects, BLAST uses the service-learning process, which is "learning by doing." Your student's BLAST group will work together to explore their community, identify needs, and develop service projects to help meet those needs. BLAST staff will make sure to celebrate accomplishments on a regular basis.
Life Skills
Participants will have discussions and do activities about the following topics: self-image and self-improvement, decision making, drug and alcohol myths and realities, communication skills, coping with anxiety and anger, social skills such as effective communication with others, confidence, and resolving conflicts.
Team Building
Participants will work together in groups to further develop social skills and to get to know the other participants better.
Sports
Participants will learn the rules, strategies, and fundamental skills of different sports including team sports, lifetime sports, and individual sports. The focus will be on sportsmanship and teamwork. They will also learn about other recreational opportunities in the community, nutrition, and wellness.
Arts & Crafts
Projects focus on the monthly theme and may be driven by service projects throughout the year. |
