Throughout the year, there are several opportunities for our volunteers to participate in special events.
- KUIK's Northwest Family and Kids Festival: Produced by KUIK 1360 AM radio at the Washington County Fairplex during the second weekend in February. We staff several City of Hillsboro booths with our partners from Hillsboro Police, Fire and Parks and Recreation.
- Hillsboro Tuesday Marketplace: Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers staff an outreach booth several times during the Tuesday Marketplace season (May - October). Purpose is to provide preparedness informaiton to market visitors and to recruit for new CERT members.
- "Preparedness in the Plaza" (in conjunction with Hillsboro Saturday Farmers' Market): An annual event, held in the Civic Center Plaza on a Saturday in September, in observance of National Preparedness Month. Volunteers staff everal outreach booths with demonstrations and information on family preparedness, long-term food storage, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, amateur radio operations, home preparedness and mitigation activities, and kids' activities.
- Oregon International Airshow: Our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and amateur radio volunteers support Hillsboro Fire and Police during this event. As part of the public safety command structure, CERT and amateur radio volunteers provide emergency communications, eyes and ears on the airshow grounds, and staff the "lost child" function. Volunteers are asked to staff a single day-long shift. We provide entrance to the event and one meal. You are required to attend an evening training session prior to the event.
- Disaster Preparedness Month: September is National Disaster Preparedness Month! We schedule a variety of outreach opportunities, culminating with an event on Civic Center Plaza during the Hillsboro Farmers' Market. Lots of volunteer opportunities, including outreach presentations or staffing booths with information and preparedness-related activities.
- Outreach Presentations: We are frequently invited to present on a variety of preparedness topics to neighborhood groups, church groups, school parents, civic groups, etc. If you would enjoy presenting, please ask about joining our speakers' bureau.
