How do I get information about marriage certificates or vital records?

The City of Hillsboro City Recorder's Office does not maintain these records. For marriage licenses, contact the Washington County Office of Assessment and Taxation at 503-846-8752. For birth and death records up to six months, contact the Washington County Heath and Human Services office at 503-846-3538. For birth and death records after six months, contact the Oregon State Vital Statistics Office in Portland at 971-673-1190.

I want to obtain a copy of a City record. What do I do?

Many City Council-related records for the past year can be accessed online. For other records review the Public Records Request form and fee schedule and call the City Recorder's Office at 503-681-6117 for more details.

How do I find someone buried in the Pioneer Cemetery?

The City Recorder's Office oversees burial records for the Pioneer Cemetery. Call 503-681-6219 or come to the fifth floor of the Civic Center. Copies of the grave location and cemetery map will be provided for you if the record can be located.

How do I apply for a liquor license for my business in Hillsboro?

Your first step is to contact the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) at 503-872-5000. Once you fill out their application, you will need to file a liquor license application with the City Recorder's Office. The application will be reviewed by the Police Department and information will be posted in the Hillsboro Argus. The City Council will approve/deny the application at the next available City Council meeting.

I want to hold an event in the City of Hillsboro. Do I have to apply for a permit?

You will need to apply for a right-of-way/special events permit from the City Manager if you will be occupying any public rights-of-way in the City (Washington County and the State of Oregon also have a permitting process for public rights-of-way under their jurisdictions). The application will be reviewed by the Police, Fire and Engineering departments. If the event is new or a recurring event route is changing, the application also needs to be approved by the Transportation Committee. The approval process takes a couple of weeks. I want to have a block party in my neighborhood. Do I have to apply for a permit?

How do I apply to hold an event in the Civic Center Plaza?

You need to fill out a Plaza Activity Permit and submit it to Erik Eriksen in the Parks and Recreation Department. Call 503-681-6530 for futher details.

How do I apply for a City commission, board or committee?

Contact the City Recorder's Office at 503-681-6269 for vacancies on various commissions, boards and committees. An application is available online. Applications are reviewed by the Mayor. All appointments by the Mayor must be at the consent of the City Council.

How do I apply for the position of Mayor or City Councilor?

Elections for these positions occur every two years and coincide with the General Election. A prospective candidate must be a registered voter in the State of Oregon who has resided in the City for 12 months immediately preceding the election date. Three Councilors and the Mayor are elected during one election and three Councilors during the next election. The City Recorder is the Elections Officer for the City. How do I register to vote?

If you can't remember if you are a registered voter or not, check the State of Oregon's voter database. Voter registration forms are located at U.S. post offices, libraries and the Department of Motor Vehicles. You can also download a form from the Oregon Secretary of State website.

How do I look up City laws?

The governing documents for the City are found in the Hillsboro Charter and Municipal Code. Additions/amendments to the municipal code are made by the City Council. The current Charter was adopted by the voters on November 6, 2007 and became effective January 1, 2008.

How do I report a violation of the Municipal Code?

Our Police Department, Code Enforcement Unit, handles these matters. Code Enforcement can be reached by calling 503-615-6645. The answering service is automated, and a response to a complaint will be made within 24 hours.

What is an ordinance?

Ordinances make up the laws of a municipality, enacted by the City Council and approved by the Mayor. Unless given an emergency clause, an ordinance is effective 30 days after its passage by the City Council. An ordinance is the most binding form of action taken by the City Council, and compliance is monitored by the Code Enforcement Unit of the Hillsboro Police Department. What is a resolution?

A resolution is used by the City Council to exercise its administrative authority. They generally deal with matters of a special or temporary nature.

What is an order?

The City Council approves an order when considering a matter that involves quasi-judicial authority, such as an appeal of the Planning Commission to the City Council.

I want to attend a City Council meeting. What kind of information do I need to know?

Citizens are welcome and encouraged to attend a City Council meeting. Meetings are held the first and third Tuesdays of the month, and a meeting schedule is posted online. Meetings are also broadcast live on Tualatin Valley Community Television on cable channel 30.
