Gallery Exhibition:
High Fiber Diet: Elements
May 7 - June 25
FREE
High Fiber Diet is an interest group within the larger Columbia FiberArts Guild. Formed in the 1980's, HFD members focused on the creation of original fiber art and its professional exhibition. The textiles on display range from mighty vistas to intensely abstract visions. The elements show focuses on textile art that draws on the tradition of quilting, while using it as a contemporary springboard. High Fiber Diet artists have envisioned both philosophical and physical images for Elements: Air, Earth, Water, Fire.

Spoken Word: The Jazz Scene as Ecology with Darrell Grant
For decades, Portland has been home to a vibrant musical community with more than its share of creative artists. Darrell Grant will ask the question, "What makes a healthy jazz scene?" Can we come up with the answers by considering what makes a healthy ecology? Is music as we know it sustainable? What, among its many traditions, institutions, practices and works do we want to save?

Gallery Exhibition: Instructor Spotlight
July 2 - 30
This exhibition by Cultural Arts Center instructors (including Bonnie Burbidge, whose work is pictured here, and Alex Chiu) highlights our belief that the arts create community. Nowhere is that more apparent than in our classes for youth and adults. Artists and art-lovers of all ages and levels come together to express themselves through drawing, painting, ceramics, and more. This annual instructor exhibition showcases the work of our talented teaching artists.
A reception for the artists will be held on Tuesday, July 2 from 6-8pm, featuring a House Concert and catering by Claeys Catering.
The concert on July 2 will feature a house concert by accomplished singer-songwriter Dany Oakes, and an interactive art demonstration in our gallery by cartoonist, Alex Chiu.

Spoken Word: Storytime for Grownups with Cassie Greer & Ian Armstrong
Join Hillsboro's own Bag&Baggage theater company members Ian Armstrong and Cassie Greer for an hour of storytelling for grownups! Remember how magical it was to be read to when you were a child? Here's your opportunity to get away from it all and let yourself slip back to a time when life was simpler, stories were trips to other times and places, and you could close your eyes and just listen. Tonight you can listen along to Mark Twain's "Hunting the Deceitful Turkey," Bret Harte's "A Boy's Dog," and PG Wodehouse's "The Tabby Terror," an evening of classic - and funny - animal tales for the young at heart!

Gallery Exhibition: Hello Neighbor
& Pamela Brown Wilkinson - Photography
August 6 - September 24
Explore your world and neighbors through a new set of eyes this summer. Photographer and Portland's first Creative Laureate, Julie Keefe, designed her project, "Hello Neighbor" to introduce South Meadows Middle School students to their community by interviewing and photographing people they admire (photo left). In turn, Keefe creates portraits of the students that challenge us to appreciate the rich stories behind the faces of our neighbors.
Hillsboro based photographer Pamela Brown Wilkinson (whose work is pictured above left) has devoted a major portion of her lifetime to capturing images from nature that are both beautiful and fascinating. As an artist, she's drawn to landscapes and compositions that inspire strong feelings, as well as reflection, wonder, and even laughter.
A reception for the artists will be held on Tuesday, August 6 from 6-8pm, featuring a House Concert and catering by Claeys Catering.
Performing in our lobby on August 6th will be acoustic duo The Darlin' Blackbirds, Lindsie Feathers and Olivia Duffy, of the local country band Ruby Feathers.
